This website is the culmination of BASIS Phoenix CSHS's 2024 final project - continued to 2026 - where we design a website to showcase our honor society's accomplishments and event participation!

What is CSHS?

CSHS stands for Computer Science Honor Society, and it is a nationwide organization that recognizes high school students who excel in computer science and are passionate about technology. It's more than just a regular honor society; CSHS encourages leadership, service, and a love for computing and technology.

Members participate in coding events, outreach programs, and tech-related projects that make a real impact in the school and community. Whether you're into programming, cybersecurity, or just curious about how tech shapes the world, CSHS is a place to grow, collaborate, and inspire others through computer science.

The BASIS Phoenix CSHS Chapter was founded in August 2024. Advised by our resident CS teacher, Ms. Yoo, this honor society aims to teach inducted students more about computer science, possible career paths arising from it, and how it can impact our futures.

2025-2026 Key Accomplishments

During the 2025-2026 school year, our chapter focused on practical impact across software development, campus events, collaboration, and outreach.

Built Websites for Local and School Organizations

Members designed and delivered websites for local businesses, including a bakery, a cleaning service, and a cupcake shop, while also supporting school organizations such as the Art Honor Society and this CSHS chapter site.

CSHS members planned and operated the Vampire Maze room for the BASIS Phoenix Haunted House, helping create a high-energy campus experience through technical setup and event execution.

Membership Requirements

To be eligible for the Computer Science Honor Society, students must:

  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 or above overall.
  • Complete certifications or actively participate in other coding clubs or hackathons to improve upon coding skills.
  • Be committed to the field of computer science by engaging in personal projects or actively attending meetings.
  • Contribute to the community by tutoring kids or through other computer science related outreach.

AI Literacy Bootcamp & Hackathon

A five-day program introducing Phoenix-area students ages 13–18 to the fundamentals of AI and machine learning — culminating in a community-focused hackathon. Launching under new chapter leadership in 2026–2027.

Unlike traditional AI programs that rely on passive instruction and pre-cleaned datasets, participants will collect their own data, train their own machine learning models, and compete in a culminating hackathon centered around real-world community problems. A professional AI/ML instructor pairs with our dedicated chapter staff to create a beginner-friendly, hands-on environment accessible to any student regardless of prior experience.

Every participant receives a certificate of completion regardless of competition outcome — because we believe confidence and understanding matter more than winning.

Phoenix-area youth are growing up in a world shaped by artificial intelligence yet most have no understanding of how it works or how it can be used to address real community needs. Without that foundation, AI becomes something students consume rather than something they understand and shape.

Free entry removes economic barriers so any student regardless of background can participate. By partnering with local nonprofits directly connected to our four problem tracks, students receive insight from the people living these problems — ensuring what they build is grounded in reality rather than theory.

KEY INSIGHT

A student building a model that recognizes speech patterns to assist someone who is nonverbal or hard of hearing isn't just writing code — they're developing empathy, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate real-world solutions clearly.

By the end of the program, every participant will be able to:

  • Explain in plain language how AI and ML systems work
  • Collect and label their own datasets using accessible tools
  • Train a beginner-friendly machine learning model
  • Apply AI responsibly while recognizing ethical considerations like bias and privacy

Teams of 3–4 compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. Every participant leaves with a completed project, a digital portfolio entry, and a verifiable certificate of completion. Year 1 data and curriculum guides are designed to support program expansion to additional Phoenix-area schools in future years.

5-Day Schedule

Introduction to machine learning concepts, ethics, and the problem tracks. Teams form and begin collecting their own real-world datasets using phones, sensors, or provided tools.
Hands-on session cleaning and labeling collected data. Teams train their first ML models using beginner-friendly tools with instructor support. Discuss bias and data quality.
Teams refine models based on test results. Local nonprofit partners share firsthand perspectives on the community problems students are solving, grounding the work in real-world context.
Teams integrate models into a working application and document their process on GitHub. Focus on clear communication: how does your tool work, who does it help, and why does it matter?
Teams present to a panel of educator-judges. Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Every participant receives their certificate of completion and celebrates their first AI project.
